One person was airlifted to a Trauma Center and a second person was taken into custody after a single vehicle accident in Southern Pines in the early morning hours Thursday.

Emergency responders were dispatched just before 1:30 am to a reported overturned vehicle on Midland Road near US Highway 1.

The first arriving units reported a vehicle on its side with one of the occupants out of the overturned SUV and a second person pinned underneath it.

Firefighters quickly braced the vehicle so that it would remain stable while they worked before using hydraulic powered rescue tools to lift the vehicle and free the seriously injured adult male victim.

After the victim was freed from underneath the SUV he was transported to the Memorial Park Ballfield off of Morganton Road where a landing zone had been established to meet a helicopter to transport him to a Trauma Center.

Midland Road was closed to traffic in both directions for an extended time period by this accident while the injured man was assisted and the debris removed from the roadway with the road reopening to normal traffic just after 2:30 am.

The male driver of the Buick SUV who appeared to be uninjured was taken into custody at the scene of the accident by law enforcement.

Responding to this incident were units with Southern Pines Fire & Rescue, Aberdeen Fire & Rescue, Moore County EMS, NC State Highway Patrol, and the Southern Pines Police Department.

The accident remained under investigation as of this report.

Update: After initially being detained at the scene of the accident the driver was charged with Driving While Impaired.
