An adult female was struck by a tractor trailer and thrown into a second vehicle while trying to cross the road Thursday evening with a family member.

Emergency units were dispatched just after 7:00 pm to a reported accident in front of Sizzlin Steak or Eggs on US Highway 1.

The first arriving emergency responder found a 54-year-old female victim in the center lane of the highway.

The victim had reportedly been struck by a tractor trailer that was driving southbound and then thrown into a Honda CRV passenger vehicle. Witnesses at the scene stated that while attempting to cross the highway the woman stepped in front of the tractor trailer which did not have time to stop before striking her.

A helicopter was not available to fly the victim to a Trauma Center due to the weather, so she was transported by ambulance to FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.

One lane in the northbound direction and one lane in the southbound direction of US Highway 1 remained closed while the victim was assisted and the accident investigated by law enforcement. The highway reopened to normal traffic at 8:34 pm.

Responding to this incident were units with Southern Pines Fires & Rescue, Moore County EMS, Aberdeen Police Department, and the Southern Pines Police Department.

In an update to this story the victim in this accident died at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst from injuries sustained from this accident. We will provide additional details for readers as they become available.
