A singlewide mobile home being demolished outside of Carthage was destoyed in a fire shortly before lunchtime on Thursday.
Emergency responders were dispatched just before 11:30 am to reports of a structure fire with flames and smoke showing in the 200 block of Stage Road near US Highway 15-501.
The first arriving fire unit reported a singlewide mobile home that was extensively involved in flames with more than half of the structure on fire.
Firefighters were able to bring the flames under control within minutes of reaching the scene, however remained at the location for more than an hour wetting the debris down to ensure the fire was fully extinguished.
Stage Road was briefly closed to traffic in both directions between US Highway 15-501 and NC 24-27 while firefighters worked to put out the fire.
According to officials no one lived at the mobile home which was being demolished. Workers were reported to have been burning debris from the structure in the yard behind the mobile home. Fire officials were working to determine how or if the fire in the mobile home somehow spread from this pile or started from some other source.
Responding to this incident were units with Carthage Fire & Rescue, Cypress Pointe Fire & Rescue, Whispering Pines Fire & Rescue, Eastwood Fire & Rescue, Moore County EMS, Moore County Fire Marshal’s Office and the Moore County Sheriff’s Department.
