A train pulling freight cars struck the front of a tractor-trailer coming out of a local Aberdeen business Wednesday.
Emergency responders were dispatched around 3:00 pm to reports of a train that had struck a vehicle at a railroad crossing on NC Highway 5.
A flatbed tractor-trailer from Sanford was reportedly pulling out of Builders FirstSource and had come to a stop with the cab of the truck on the railroad tracks without realizing that there was a train coming. According to one emergency responder that we spoke with at the scene the driver attempted to back the truck off of the tracks but the front end of the truck was struck by the oncoming train.
After being struck by the train, the truck and trailer were pushed off to the side of the tracks where the vehicle came to a stop.
The crew on the freight train had applied the brakes on the train and brought the large number of cars to a stop a short distance after striking the truck.
According to police officials the driver of the truck and the crew on the train all escaped injury in this accident.
People driving on NC Highway 5 at the time of the incident experienced short delays due to the emergency vehicles along the roadway.
Responding to this incident were units with Aberdeen Fire & Rescue, Moore County EMS, Moore County Sheriff’s Department, and Aberdeen Police Department.
