Shirley Avery Odom, age 81, of Aberdeen died Saturday at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 24, 2017 at Emmanuel Baptist Church with Pastors Eugene Ussery, John Chavis and Gary Ashley officiating. Burial to follow at Bethesda Cemetery.
Born to the late Rastus Frank and Alene Marie Fields Avery on January 7, 1936 in Harnett County. She was a retired preschool teacher. She was a DAV Auxiliary Commander of Moore County Unit 83, a DAV Auxiliary State Chaplain, and a DAV Auxiliary 5th District Commander. She was a volunteer with the Aberdeen Parks and Recreation. She was a member of the Moore County Red Hats Society and enjoyed volunteering for veteran causes.
She was preceded in death by her son, Barry Walters, a sister, Kellon DeCaro, and a grandson, Allan Walters.
Survived by her husband Cedoin Odum Jr.; son, Ricky Walters, Jr. of Aberdeen; step-daughter, Crystal D. Odom of Kingston Springs, TN; sisters, Betty Byrd of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Nancy Capps of Plant City, Florida, Frankie Allison of Clayton, NC, and Phyllis Rogers of Greensboro, NC; granddaughter, Christy Scarboro of Pinehurst; step-grandson Nicholas York and step-granddaughter Macie York both of Kingston Springs, TN; great-granddaughter, Gracie Scarboro and great-grandson Jonathan Scarboro.
Family will receive friends Monday from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Boles Funeral Home in Southern Pines.
