One person was airlifted to a Trauma Center and the highway was temporarily blocked in both directions after a multivehicle accident Wednesday in Pinehurst.

Emergency responders were dispatched to a vehicle accident at 2:19 pm located on US Highway 15-501 at the intersection of Page Road near the hospital.

The wreck involved three SUV’s including one that had overturned in the middle of the roadway. Witnesses at the scene stated that a Chevrolet Silverado pickup was also involved in the accident but fled the scene.

The driver of the overturned vehicle was transported from the scene by ambulance to meet a helicopter at the soccer field behind the Pinehurst fire department to be airlifted to a Trauma Center.

The occupants of the other vehicles involved were uninjured and refused transport to the hospital.

US Highway 15-501 was closed to traffic in both directions for an extended time period by this accident while the injured man was assisted and the debris could be cleared from the roadway.

Responding to this accident were units with Pinehurst Fire Department, Moore County EMS, and the Pinehurst Police Department.

The cause of the accident remained under investigation as of this report.
