A bicycle rider was airlifted to a Trauma Center and the driver of a PT Cruiser was transported to the hospital by ambulance after an accident between the two Tuesday afternoon near the Robbins Crossroads.

Emergency responders were dispatched at 5:10 pm to an accident involving a passenger vehicle and a bicycle in the 7200 block of NC Highway 705 a short distance from NC Highway 24/27.

The first arriving emergency unit to reach the scene called for a helicopter to be dispatched for the rider of the bicycle whose head had hit the windshield of the vehicle. A short time later a second ambulance was requested to assist the adult female driver of the PT Cruiser to be checked for an pre-existing heart condition.

One lane of NC Highway 705 was blocked to traffic for more than one hour while the injured were assisted and the debris from the accident could be cleaned up.
