Troy – A seasoned interventional cardiologist with strong ties to the Sandhills will return to the area and FirstHealth of the Carolinas this summer to provide full-time cardiology services in Montgomery County.

Scott J. Denardo, M.D., will join FirstHealth Primary Care & Cardiology in Troy on July 1. During an earlier FirstHealth association starting 24 years ago, Dr. Denardo performed Moore Regional Hospital’s first stent placement, a procedure that helped position FirstHealth’s interventional cardiology service as one of the most advanced community hospital programs in the state.

“It feels like I’m just returning home to provide cutting-edge care to a county in need after 10 years of pursuing specific research goals at the University of Florida and Duke University,” Dr. Denardo says. “I look forward to re-establishing myself in this area, getting to know the residents of Montgomery County and providing cardiovascular services within the county.”

Both Beth Walker, president of FirstHealth Montgomery Memorial Hospital, and Dan Barnes, D.O., president of FirstHealth Physician Group, welcome Dr. Denardo’s return to FirstHealth.

“We are so happy to have Dr. Denardo back with FirstHealth,” says Dr. Barnes. “He’s an outstanding physician and has a strong following with former patients. Having him in Montgomery County will be a real advantage to the community as well as a strong asset to FirstHealth.”

According to Walker, having Dr. Denardo in the same location as Chrystal Eller, M.D., and Taressa Bryan, FNP, at FirstHealth Primary Care & Cardiology, will provide a new level of convenience to Montgomery County residents who need cardiology care.

“The FirstHealth Montgomery Memorial Hospital Board of Advisers and staff are very excited to have Dr. Denardo join our team,” she says. “Having a full-time cardiologist here will be a great asset for the community since we have so many residents with cardiac conditions.”

In his Montgomery County location, Dr. Denardo will provide cardiovascular consultations and perform and interpret such non-invasive cardiovascular studies as electrocardiograms, echocardiograms and stress tests (with and without nuclear imaging). He will perform invasive and interventional procedures, including angioplasty and stent placement, in Reid Heart Center at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.

“I am excited about providing cardiovascular care to residents in Montgomery County,” he says. “There is a very real need for these services in this community.”

A native of California, Dr. Denardo received a double-major B.A. in physics and applied mathematics from the University of California at Berkeley and his M.D. from the University of California at San Francisco.

He completed his internship and residency at UCLA and a fellowship in general cardiology at the University of California-San Francisco before completing a fellowship in interventional cardiology at Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation in La Jolla, California.

Dr. Denardo spent 13+ years with the cardiology program at Pinehurst Medical Clinic and provided interventional services at Moore Regional Hospital before joining the teaching and research faculty with the University of Florida. In 2010, he joined the teaching and research faculty at Duke University Medical Center, providing cardiovascular care and student mentoring services with the Duke cardiology program at Southeastern Regional Medical Center in Lumberton.

He has also contributed research papers on various topics related to general and interventional cardiology to numerous medical journals.

A Fellow of the American College of Physicians, the American College of Cardiology and the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions, Dr. Denardo is a founding member of the Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography and a member of the American Medical Association.

He and his wife, Shirley, a nurse with FirstHealth Hospice & Palliative Care, have three daughters.

Dr. Denardo says he looks forward to partnering with the Montgomery County community in helping improve the cardiovascular health of area residents.

“My wife and I very much enjoyed the recent Montgomery Foundation Spring Event to raise funds for The Daily Mile program,” he says. “Providing a walking track and encouraging daily exercise for youth goes a long way to promote healthy habits as they become adults.”

FirstHealth Primary Care & Cardiology is located at 522 Allen St., Suite 101, in the Medical Arts Building adjacent FirstHealth Montgomery Memorial Hospital in Troy. To make an appointment with Scott J. Denardo, M.D., call (910) 571-5510.
